Why Is Drainage Planning Important?

Very few people outside of professionals think about the importance of drainage planning for a driveway, not to mention how crucial of a step in the process it is. Without a proper drainage plan, your driveway will not adequately manage water runoff which can lead to a flooded garage or pooling water in your driveway itself.

Proper drainage planning requires careful consideration of water flow as far back as installing the sub-floor before asphalt is in the picture at all. Planning ahead enables the installation process for the asphalt itself to be a smooth and simple one. The most important aspect of the planning process is to ensure that the driveway is graded so that there is a positive drainage flow away from the house. A properly planned drainage solution should result in little-to-no pooling water on the surface of the driveway itself. Water should all naturally flow either down the slope of the driveway, or over each side, if the driveway is flat.
